on the show:
The idea for the exhibition emerged in the winter of 2024 during a text message conversation between Hans Hemmert, Axel Lieber and Via Lewandowsky. The aim was to revisit, through works by Hans and some of his artist friends, that resilient blend of humor and existential seriousness that was so wonderfully embodied in Hans’s artistic approach.
Starting out from a few works that had still been discussed and agreed upon with Hans, the exhibition gradually took shape, and it seemed only natural that Vincenz Sala should provide the stage for it.
Hans’s works form the center of gravity around which the other artistic positions revolve. Without any claim to completeness, the exhibition offers different perspectives on the “Hemmert operating system” — a network of friendships, artistic dialogues and shared experiences spanning different phases of life and geographical spaces: from Franconia to West Berlin and into the lived experience of formerly divided Germany.
This is not a sentimental retrospective, but a snapshot from an engine room that, even two years after Hans’s far-too-early death, remains in operation, continuing to drive artistic work through dialogue with and among his artist friends.
