Two tricycles become monumental. They are enlarged as if it were made for an adult. The handlebars grow to an unreachable height, while the saddle remains in its old place. With the second tricycle, the transformation is the opposite – the handlebars remain in their old position while the saddle shoots upwards.
There is no right scale here. Everything is too big and at the same time too small. On the ground they travel in different directions, but if you look up, the saddle and handlebars point in the same direction, giving the impression that they are one and the same vehicle. Up in the air, there’s a consensus that doesn’t necessarily exist on the ground.
School is about development. You grow during your time at school, physically, mentally and intellectually. For me, the sculpture evokes many associations and thoughts that feel relevant to a high school: the relationship between the common, the collective and the individual. You grow at different levels, but also at different speeds. There is dialogue at different levels – who leads, who follows, how do you gain knowledge to navigate? It is a complex image and an absurd metaphor, which cannot be reduced to a single sentence, but which poses a constant question.
